Greenhouse Gas Reduction in the Production of Concrete in Nova Scotia

Assistant Professor, Dept Civil Engineering

Date: Wednesday 17 May, 2023
Time: 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Venue: In-Person, MA121

Abstract

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the construction industry revolve around the approximately 1 ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted in the production of 1 ton of cement, and emissions from the practices of concrete production and use in the construction industry.

Concrete is a major material used in infrastructure throughout Nova Scotia, and globally concrete accounts for 6-10% of anthropogenic CO2.

In this seminar, we will present the results of research into technologies for reducing concrete GHG, industry road maps, policies, and life-cycle analysis for some selected technologies in the Nova Scotia context. We will also present recommendations for action on GHG reduction in concrete in Nova Scotia.Speaker

Biography

Dr. Pemberton Cyrus is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering, and is interested in routing, scheduling and information systems design. He serves on the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board and the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission.

Dr. Fadi Oudah is an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering. He leads the Structural Assessment and Retrofit (SAR) research group at Â鶹´«Ã½. His work in structural reliability and retrofit using advanced methods was applied in assessing the safety of existing structures, optimizing the repair of deficient structures, and the design of structures subjected to extreme loads in Canada and abroad. Dr. Oudah serves as a voting member in several structural design committees including the National Building Code of Canada and American Concrete Institute.

Dr. Uday Venkatadri is Professor of Industrial Engineering. He has taught at Â鶹´«Ã½ since July 2001. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University. He is interested in forward and reverse supply chain management, the Physical Internet, facilities design, and production planning. At Â鶹´«Ã½, he currently teaches supply chain management, advanced facilities planning, and design of inventory systems.
