A Career in Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineers optimize processes and systems by finding ways to save time, money, energy, and materials. Through mathematical models, Industrial Engineers design systems and methods that will help businesses meet their production goals. Whether it's streamlining the manufacturing processes of automobiles to make cars more affordable or optimizing the nursing staff at a hospital to improve patient care, career options span a range of industries.

What you'll learn/do with a BEng degreein Industrial Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering at 鶹ý provides awell-balanced technical education.

What kinds of problems do Industrial Engineers solve?

Industrial Engineers solve problems at the system level: how does your system of people, materials, money and information operate?

We use mathematics, science and engineering to change that operation to use less money and materials, get better information, and have happier and more productive employees.

For example: a recent graduate runs vehicle routing and scheduling for Purolator – he finds the cheapest way to get your packages to you within the delivery standard, using less trucks, fuel, and driver time, while keeping customers happy.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, helped to build the company into the second largest in the world by optimizing the supply chain from raw materials to the iPhone you hold in your hand.

What kinds of industries do Industrial Engineers work in?

Literally everywhere: mining, agriculture, shipping, trucking, retail, wholesale, manufacturing, entertainment, environment, aerospace, consulting, financial, health care, name it and we are there. What makes Industrial Engineering universal is how we work in these industries.

We learn how these industries operate and then we find ways to improve them. For example: many of our graduates work at Canadian Tire, managing billions of dollars of inventory, so that the company spends and wastes as little as possible while ensuring that if you visit a store you can always find what you want.

We do the same for Loblaws, Sobeys, The Bay, Walmart, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft.

What's the best part of our Industrial Engineering program/department?

Our students are the best part of Industrial Engineering. Every year we have students who are deeply engaged in leadership at all levels: the Department, Faculty and Senate. Our students and faculty are awake, engaged and socially welcoming, we are from all over Canada and the world, and from many cultures. When you join Industrial Engineering, this might sound corny, but you join a large extended family.

There are many types of Industrial Engineering, but our program is focused on operational excellence. How do you get the best out of your employees and your systems? How do you get the most out of your investment?

鶹ý's Engineering Diploma program (Years 1 and 2)

鶹ý's Engineering Diploma Program

You can begin your studies at 鶹ý or if you prefer to begin your studies in a smaller campus environment, the Engineering Diploma program at 鶹ý's Faculty of Agriculture in Truro is the academic equivalent of the first two years of an Engineering degree (BEng). After earning your diploma, you can complete the final two or three years of your BEng in Halifax.

A substantial part of the work in first and second year is made up ofcore classescommon to all engineering disciplines. You willapply to your preferred disciplinein the winter term of first year and the elective classes taken in second year will depend on your selected discipline.

Thefirst and second years(Study Terms 1, 2, 3, and 4) of study arecommontoall engineering students. You will choose to focus on a specific engineering discipline in yourthird yearof study..

Applying to an engineering discipline

In the winter term of your first year, you will apply to the Industrial Engineering discipline. See the For Current Students section for more information onapplying to an engineering discipline.

Program Curriculum

You may choose to complete the 5-year Co-op Program or the 5-year Standard Non Co-op Program. Co-op students take thesame academic programas the non co-op program; however, our co-op option gives you an opportunity to complement your studies withthree paid work terms.

Accelerated non co-op students take the same academic program as the co-op students; however, Study Term 6 would be taken before Study Term 5.

* Note: Please email ieng@dal.ca no later than January to receive advice and permission to join the accelerated non co-op program in May.

Students not wishing to participate in the co-op program are able to structure their academic program over a two-year time period. To do so requires the student to begin the program at the beginning of the summer study term, which commences the first week of May (Study Term 6). The student then completes Study Term 5 in the fall, and then Study Term 7 in the winter. After a summer “off”, the student completes the final two study terms in the same order as students in the co-op program thus completing the five study or academic terms within two calendar years.

The default non co-op program follows the co-op schedule, except that work-terms are off-terms for these students.

In their final year, all students undertake a major project. Projects are drawn from companies or institutions outside the University and are treated as a consulting assignment.

The students are evaluated based on their ability to achieve an innovative solution by drawing upon the analytical skills developed throughout their program of studies. They must also, of course, satisfy the practical requirements of the outside client.
