Sodium Ion Batteries

Sodium ion batteries are gaining interest as a possible low cost alternative to lithium ion batteries.
Sodium has different chemical properties than lithium, most notably its larger size. As a result, sodium transition metal oxides form with inexpensive raw materials and structures and chemistries that do not exist in the lithium system. We are investigating a number of these chemistries for use as practical positive electrode materials in sodium ion cells.
Nanoporous carbon materials are leading candidates for sodium ion battery negative electrodes. By different chemical and thermal treatments, we are modifying the nanopores of carbon and their reactivity with sodium, enhancing their performance as negative electrode materials.
