Title:
"Understanding Global Marine Heatwaves from a semi-Lagrangian Perspective"
Abstract:
We track spatially coherent large-scale MHWs from a set of snapshots indicating MHW occurrences during 1982-2022 and provide a comprehensive characterization of their intensity and movement patterns. A morphological approach is used to project these spatiotemporally varying MHW tracks onto a unique framework, allowing us to examine their kinematic evolution from a composite perspective. By linking their evolution patterns with other atmospheric and oceanic properties, we found that the development of large-scale MHW tracks is primarily driven by atmospheric processes. Beyond their mechanisms from a composite perspective, these MHW tracks are further classified into five types based on their individual atmospheric and oceanic states, each demonstrating unique evolutionary features, local drivers, links to remote forcing, and subsurface structures. The information of the 5 MHW types has been summarized and will be discussed in the presentation.
