An engineering approach to health research issues

Biomedical engineering applies engineering principles to probe biomedical systems and to design technologies that improve healthcare. Research in biomedical engineering is multidisciplinary, often combining equal parts engineering and medicine.

The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at Â鶹´«Ã½ was established in 1999 as a collaborative effort of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering, and with significant assistance from the Faculty of Dentistry. With a degree in biomedical engineering, you'll enjoy excellent career prospects, research opportunities and training that spans medicine, basic science and engineering. At Â鶹´«Ã½, you'll use cutting edge tools to address health problems that affect millions of people - while you're still in school.

As biomedical engineers, we take an engineering approach to health research problems. Faculty and students in the department research:

  • synthesis of new tissues, drugs and biomedical materials
  • development of novel biomedical devices
  • mechanical and electrical properties of tissues
  • operation of physiological systems in the body
  • human motion and gait
  • development of new medical imaging systems and techniques

As a graduate student, you'll work closely with engineers and clinicians on projects that address contemporary medical problems. You'll also have the opportunity to work in an environment that fosters medical device commercialization, which helps bring our technology to the patients who need it.
