The Clairmont Centre for Community Safety Research

The Clairmont Centre for Community Safety Research (the Clairmont Centre) was established in 2023 to replace its predecessor, the Atlantic Institute of Criminology (AIC). Named after the AIC’s long-standing Director, Professor Donald Clairmont, the Clairmont Centre acts as a ‘meeting place’ for diverse research and innovation partnerships that seek to reduce harms and improve community safety in Atlantic Canada.

The Clairmont Centre focuses on applied research, evaluation, and knowledge exchange in partnership with policy-makers, practitioners, community organizations, and other academics. The Clairmont Centre also provides research opportunities for graduate students interested in building skills in applied social science research.

Research partnerships and consultation services are available to government, community, and academic partners for planning and executing research and evaluation projects. If you are interested in working with the Clairmont Centre, please reach out to the Director, Dr. Chris Giacomantonio to discuss.

CURRENT AND RECENT PROJECTS

Governance and legitimacy in the new institutions of crisis response: The rapid development of civilian-led crisis response services in Canada and the US in recent years represents a significant change in the urban institutional environment. This two-year SSHRC-funded project is using a mixed-methods approach to better understand the kinds of governance, oversight, and accountability processes used in civilian-led crisis response services, and how these organizations are navigating their positions within a changing institutional context.

Evaluation of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training in Halifax Regional Municipality: The Clairmont Centre is supporting an evaluation of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training for frontline staff at the Halifax Regional Municipality. This is a two-year project that is examining the implementation process, staff perceptions and utilization of the training, and developing broader lessons for training delivery in the municipality.

Evaluations of the MOSH Justice Initiative and Safer Supply Program (completed): From 2022-2023, the Clairmont Centre provided year-one evaluations of the implementation of two new initiatives at the North End Community Health Centre. These included: The Mobile Outreach Street Health (MOSH) Justice Initiative, which was a pilot initiative to address the needs for primary care experienced by those leaving a correctional facility and re-integrating into community; and a Safer Supply program targeting people who are criminalized for substance use in Halifax.

For information about any of these projects, please contact the Centre’s Director at chrisgiac@dal.ca
