Congratulations to this year's Fooshee and Dennis Prize Winners!

Born in Colchester County Nova Scotia, William Henry Dennis entered the work force as an apprentice printer in Halifax, and went on to become the publisher of the Halifax Herald in 1920.  Upon his death in 1954, W.H. Dennis left Â鶹´«Ã½ funding to recognize two early Nova Scotian writers:  Joseph Howe and James De Mille.  The Chronicle Herald continues this tradition with an annual donation to fund the prizes.  This year’s winners of the W.H. Dennis Memorial Prizes for Literary Composition are:

James DeMille Short Story Prize: Colleen MacDonald for “â€

Clare Murray Fooshee was a Â鶹´«Ã½ student and great lover poetry.  Upon her death in 1952, her husband Malcolm Fooshee, and many of her friends, donated funds for a poetry competition to be held each year in memory of Clare.  Malcolm Fooshee asked that any unused income for the fund be used for other appropriate purposes in Clare’s memory, and since 2003 the fund has been contributing towards Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s student publication of creative writing, Fathom.  This year’s winners of the Clare Murray Fooshee Poetry Prizes are:
