Â鶹´«Ã½ Dr. Terashima
Dr. Mikiko Terashima (Ph.D., MCIP, LPP) is a planner and socio-spatial epidemiologist whose research focuses on making built environments healthier, more equitable, and inclusive for all. As the founder and lead of the Planning for Equity, Accessibility, and Community Health (PEACH) Research Unit at Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s School of Planning, she explores methods to measure and visualize accessibility in public spaces, helping designers, planners, and policymakers better understand and address barriers to inclusion.
Trained as an urban planner (MScP, UBC, 2000) and socio-spatial epidemiologist (Interdisciplinary Ph.D., Â鶹´«Ã½, 2011), Dr. Terashima investigates how social and built environmental factors contribute to systemic inequalities in health and well-being. Her work examines spatial accessibility to essential services such as food outlets and healthcare, as well as the impact of the built environment on mobility and participation for individuals with disabilities and older adults. Through PEACH, she leads initiatives on experience-based accessible design standards, the economic value of accessible spaces, and innovative approaches to walkability.
Since joining the Faculty of Architecture and Planning in 2014, Dr. Terashima has been dedicated to mentoring students who aspire to be leaders in inclusive planning and design. She has served as Associate Dean of Research and Global Relations since 2023 and is currently Acting Dean, committed to supporting the faculty, students, and staff in their continued success.
