In Memoriam: Dr. Laurence (Larry) Holt

Dr. Larry Holt passed away December 30, 2019 (age 79) at Hospice Halifax. Larry was born (July 7, 1940) and raised in Lawrence, MA. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1957, earned a BSc. (1961) and MSc, (1963) from Springfield College, and a PhD (1968) from Southern Illinois University. At age 30, he and his wife Alyce came to Nova Scotia, in 1972 moving to their current home in Oakfield, NS.

Larry was predeceased by his parents, Anne and Mitchell Holt; sister, Patricia Carlson (Charles). He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alyce (Mezey); son, Jason (Megan); brothers, Oschr (Donna) and David (Sarah); sister, Arva Rose (David). Larry enjoyed athletic success, most notably as a swimmer at Springfield Collage, and later at the Masters level in Halifax. He was an avid golfer and a member of Oakfield Golf Club.  He also enjoyed singing with his musical friends.

Larry was employed at 鶹ý in what is now the School of Health and Human Performance, where he taught various courses in applied anatomy and kinesiology, analysis of human movement, and research methods. He started in the School in 1970.  Much of his research focused on sport science. His most recent book (published in 2004) focuses on improving the biomechanics for golfers in their golf swing is titled, “An experimenter’s guide to the full swing”.  He was nominated for 鶹ý Teacher of the Year (in 1980 and 2001).  In 2006, after 36 years, he retired as Full Professor, but remained as Adjunct Professor and continued to publish articles and books until his death. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, Sackville. A celebration of life gathering will be held in the spring. Online condolences may be made to the family .
