Winter, January 7 – April 8, 2019

PAY RATE:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý  According to CUPE Collective Agreement

NURS4220.03 Mental Health Nursing (for Fall as well as Winter term)

Integrating a holistic perspective within a primary healthcare philosophy, this course focuses on the promotion of individual and community mental well-being. Through reflective practice the use of nursing theories and effective communication, students assist clients through the challenges of mental health problems, crisis, and mental disorders. Students critique the social responsibility of the nursing profession through, not only direct care, but also client advocacy.

This is a 3-credit hour course. Fall term lectures are held on Tuesdays from 0935 – 1125, winter term lectures are held Mondays from 1135 – 1425. The course also includes 78 hours of clinical time for students which is taking place Thursdays and Fridays in two blocks of five weeks.

The fall appointment runs from September 1, 2018 through December 4, 2018, and the winter appointment runs from January 7 through April 8, 2019. The part-time academic instructor reports directly to the Associate Director, Undergraduate Studies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development of teaching and learning activities related to course-specific topic
  • Assume Course Professor role in delivery of course content
  • Assessment and evaluation of student learning
  • Oversee clinical component of course including working with clinical instructors to ensure optimal learning experience for students
  • Use of Brightspace for course delivery
  • Respond to student queries about coursework
  • Attend initial instruction with Instructional Learning Online services re: Brightspace
  • Participate in course discussions within the program
  • Develop and administer examinations
  • Submit final course grades
  • Follow up with students as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: Candidates must hold a graduate degree in Nursing, or related field, with a strong background in mental health/psychiatric nursing. Prior teaching experience an asset.  PhD preferred.
