Position: First Year Tutorial Coordinator

Purpose of Position: 聽

Responsible for the continued development and management of all tutorials for all 1000 level classes at the College of Sustainability (currently SUST 1000.06 and SUST 1001.06) ensuring they meet the current learning objectives.聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽聽

Major Responsibilities:

Educational program development

Representative Duties:

a)聽聽聽聽 Work collaboratively with instructors for SUST 1000.06 and SUST 1001.06 and the Academic Advisor and Program Manager to deliver tutorials that support the learning objectives of the first year SUST courses.

b)聽聽聽 Responsible for logistics and scheduling of TA Training and Tutorials in consultation with Course Instructor(s) and Program Manager: Assignment of TA to tutorial section, determine TA training requirements and identify relevant resources.

c)聽聽聽聽 Responsible for all aspects of tutorial development for SUST 1000.06 and SUST 1001.06, in partnership with course instructors, including: invent new and refine existing activities and assignments, develop questions on readings, revise questions and activities provided by profs, develop tutorial handouts and provide copies for TAs and post online, consult with TAs on academic questions regarding student work, refer cases to Professors when appropriate.

d)聽聽聽 Develop all make-up tutorial instructions.

e)聽聽聽聽 Incorporate ideas and objectives from 2 鈥� 3 professors into a cohesive tutorial activity.

f)聽聽聽聽 Ensure that teaching assistants in SUST 1000.06 are aware of and adhere to the requirements of the "Writing Across the Curriculum" policy in coordination with the Academic Advisor and Program Manager.

g)聽聽聽聽 Responsible for all communication with and coordination of Teaching Assistants in SUST 1000 and SUST 1001 regarding tutorial instruction, grading rubrics, grade submission and deadlines.

h)聽聽聽 Develop and update online rubrics for all assignments in consultation with course instructor(s) and Teaching Assistants. Adapt with TA feedback.

i)聽聽聽聽聽 Assist course instructor(s) with posting all detailed assignment instructions on Brightspace. 聽

j)聽聽聽聽聽 Responsible for assignment dropboxes on Brightspace: Write clear dropbox instructions, attach relevant assignment files, set correct deadlines and other submission settings.

k)聽聽聽 Manage the Case Study Team Peer Evaluation for SUST 1001.

l)聽聽聽聽聽 Assess student requests for exceptions from the deadlines and policies published in syllabus: alternate tutorial attendance, tutorial participation make-up opportunities, Thursday evening lecture video access, assignment extensions. Consult with course instructors and Program Manager as appropriate.

m)聽聽 聽Complete TA Exit Evaluations in consultation with Course Instructor(s).

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Successful applicants must be a graduate or professional student at 麻豆传媒. Applicants must have experience and a background in a field related to Environment, Sustainability and Society.

Applicants must have excellent written and verbal communications skills. Experience as a Teaching Assistant or other educational training/experience is required. Proficiency with MS Word and MS Excel is required. Familiarity with Brightspace Online Learning System is an asset; training is available.

Terms of contract:

September 鈥� December 2016: $23.00 per hour, approx. 5 hours/week (training).

January 鈥� June 2017: 60% (25 hours per week). Overtime expected at busy times, to be paid hourly, anticipated not more than an additional 5 hours per week. 聽

Major Responsibilities:

1. Academic advising, academic program support. 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽聽

Representative duties:

a)聽聽聽聽 Advise students on program selection, class selection, registration, university and college policies and regulations. Includes critical advising sessions for upper year students regarding completion of degree requirements. This requires analysis for each student individually due to the diversity of options in the ESS program. It also requires an understanding of the character, options and opportunities of these diverse programs in order to assist ESS students determine their program choice.

b)聽聽聽 Understand ESS degree requirements, General Degree Requirements and Academic Regulations for all Faculties participating in the College of Sustainability: Faculty of Arts and Social Science, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Computer Science, Faculty of Architecture and Planning and King鈥檚 College.

c)聽聽聽聽 Assess and make decisions on student requests for letters of permission, waivers of program-level requirements, ESS Elective considerations and other similar requests, in consultation with the Director as needed.

d)聽聽聽 Advise students on General Degree Requirements and Academic Regulations; consult with Registrar鈥檚 Office and relevant Faculties to answer questions; help prepare waiver requests and refer to relevant Faculties.

e)聽聽聽聽 Meet with the First Year Advising Team to discuss the ESS program and advising for first year students.

f)聽聽聽聽 Contact prospective students accepted to 麻豆传媒 with expressed interest in ESS.

g)聽聽聽聽 Advise students on academic probation or experiencing academic difficulties; refer to appropriate academic office and professional services to assist with personal or academic issues.

h)聽聽聽 Consult with Academic Secretary in the compilation and analysis of data on student activity in the college (e.g., awards/scholarships, GPA, academic difficulties), in order to identify important trends or issues; make recommendations or answer queries of Director in relation to same.

i)聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Advocate on behalf of students enrolled in College programs.

j)聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Final review and edits of 2017/2018 Academic Timetable for SUST courses in consultation with the Director. Manage late timetable changes as requested by Instructors or the Registrar鈥檚 Office, in consultation with the Director.

2. Overall Tutorial Management

Representative Duties:

a)聽聽聽聽 Assist SUST course instructors and Tutorial Coordinators with operation of Brightspace online learning system: Advise on gradebook setup, rubrics, and TA interaction with grading system.

b)聽聽聽 Support the individual course tutorial coordinators.

c)聽聽聽聽 Liaise with Manager F&A on teaching assistant employment issues.

d)聽聽聽 Work with Program Secretary to ensure that all Tutorials, TAs and Tutorial Coordinators are evaluated by students at the end of term: draft surveys for review and approval by SUST course instructors and Tutorial Coordinators (if applicable), ensure appropriate notification and distribution to students.

Requirements of the position:

Applicants must possess an undergraduate or Masters degree in a subject related to Environment, Sustainability and Society. Knowledge of 麻豆传媒 Academic Regulations and Degree Requirements is required. Familiarity with the Environment, Sustainability and Society program is required. Must demonstrate capacity to learn quickly, exercise good judgment and listen attentively. Effective written and verbal communication skills required. Effective management of heavy email traffic is required. Attention to detail, willingness to learn.
