Counselling Services: Groups and Workshops

Graduate Student Support Workshops 听

These workshops are designed for students in graduate programs who are struggling to manage stress, or to find
the motivation to complete their degree. 听

There are three workshops scheduled, students can attend one or more depending on their interests and needs. 听

1) How to be a grad student (and still have a life): Thursday October 16, 1:30-3:30pm

鈥赌赌赌赌赌 -exploring the various roles involved in being a grad student
鈥赌赌赌赌赌 -finding 鈥渂alance鈥

2) Under Pressure: Dealing with stress: Thursday October 23, 1:30-3:30pm

鈥赌赌赌赌赌赌 -exploring unique grad school stressors
鈥赌赌赌赌赌 -self-care
鈥赌赌赌赌赌 -relaxation skills
鈥赌赌赌赌赌 -avoiding burnout

3) Keep your eyes on the prize: Maintaining motivation: Thursday October 30, 1:30-3:30pm鈥 听

鈥赌赌赌赌赌 -short term and long term goals
鈥赌赌赌赌赌 -rekindling your passion for research and writing
鈥赌赌赌赌赌 -finding meaning in the grad school experience

The Mindfulness Group is for students who would like to learn and practice being aware, present, attentive and focused. Mindfulness practice involves paying attention on purpose with compassion, non-judgmentally, fostering kindness and compassion toward self and others. (Jon Kabat-Zinn, 2004) 听

Cultivating Mindfulness by learning how to pay attention to present experiences 鈥渃an directly improve the functioning of the body and brain, subjective mental life with its feelings thoughts, and interpersonal relationships鈥. (Siegal, 2007)

Asperger鈥檚 Syndrome/Austism Spectrum Disorder Support Group

Dr. Shannon Johnson will facilitate a group for university students, who have a diagnosis of Asperger's鈥疭yndrome Disorder or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), 听

Mondays, 4:30 鈥 6:00 pm

The goal of the group is to help people with ASD adjust to and cope鈥痺ith the social and academic challenges often experienced in university.鈥 This group will also provide opportunities to meet other鈥痷niversity students with ASD and learn about social and academic鈥痳esources available at 麻豆传媒.

EATING DISORDERS鈥 DROP-IN GROUP

鈥疶he Eating Disorders Group is an on-going group which continues until the end of the academic year.鈥 The Group is for students who are experiencing difficulties with eating in the form of severe restrictions or anorexia nervosa, binging with or without purging or bulimia, and compulsive overeating.鈥 The focus of the group is to provide a safe setting, support self-defined change, and resolve underlying feelings.

SLEEP and RELAXATION WORKSHOPS
鈥疶hese two-hour workshops include tips on how to fall asleep faster and feel more refreshed during the day.鈥 Participants will also learn relaxation techniques, including deep breathing, progressive muscle relation and visualization.
