September 22-26 is national Learn at Work Week, an annual celebration of the value and importance of workplace learning and development in Canada. Workplace learning has a positive impact on employee performance and productivity and is crucial to healthy organizations and the Canadian economy. This national celebration provides a good opportunity for us to reflect on what it means to be a ‘learning organization’ and how workplace learning impacts Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s success.
As an employee at Dal, there are so many opportunities to learn: , , coaching and mentoring, peer networks, special projects and committee work, etc. If you don’t yet have an individual development plan for the coming year, there’s no time like now! Managers play a critical role in supporting employee and team development. If you are a manager, EOD encourages you to engage your team in learning activities and professional development events this year to expand your team’s capabilities and power up your workplace. Consider the various ways to raise awareness of the impact of workplace learning and integrate learning into your workplace culture, for example by:
•   Demonstrating the link between individual and organizational performance
•   Organizing customized learning opportunities
•   Encouraging the effective use of feedback
•   Helping employees find a mentor or coach
•   Sharing the success of a learning initiative with other departments
•   Recognizing employees who achieve their professional development goals
•   Engaging all staff in planning learning activities
•   Supporting the transfer of learning in the workplace.
