Research Assistant (Policy)

Note: this is a part-time, grant-paid opportunity.

Project: Health Promotion and GLBTIQ Pathways to Health

Position Term: December 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014
Hours: 10 – 20hrs/week (flexibility required)
Rate of Pay: $20-25 per hour (rate based on experience and qualifications)

Project Background: This is a collaborative project between Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s Gender and Health Promotion Studies Unit (GAHPS) and prideHealth (a partnership of Capital Health and the IWK Health Centre). The long-term goal of this project is to measure the health of Nova Scotia’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (GLBTIQ) communities. The Research Assistant will provide initial project support further explore how members of GLBTIQ communities define health and access the healthcare system (both formal and informal).

Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position will have a completed graduate degree, or be in the process of completing a graduate degree in health promotion, social sciences or a related health science degree. Undergraduate students may be considered depending on relevant experience. Applicants must have the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential for this position. Ability to read and/or write French is an asset. Experience with GLBTIQ communities and the Nova Scotia healthcare system are also considered assets.

Duties: The successful candidate will:
* Conduct literature reviews and policy scans relating to measures of GLBTIQ health.
* Perform outreach to relevant researchers, doctors, public health authorities, community-based organizations (CBOs) and members of the GLBTIQ communities.
* Organize meetings (e.g. information sessions, roundtable discussions) of relevant stakeholders.
* Develop and maintain a database of relevant contacts.
* Create and complete relevant grant proposals.
