Dal's Studley Quad swirled with colour Sunday morning as students turned out to celebrate Holi, a popular Hindu festival that marks the arrival of spring.
The event, hosted by the International Centre and the Â鶹´«Ã½ International Students' Association, began with food and music in the atrium at LeMarchant Place before students made their way onto the campus quad to throw coloured powder at each other — one of the defining aspects of the celebration.
Warm temperatures meant students were able to shed some heavier outerwear and embrace the fun of spreading the colours, which were food-based and non-toxic. The colours are meant to symbolize equality.
On the Indian subcontinet, where the holiday originated, and in other countries where it is celebrated, the festival often begins with a bonfire. In addition to marking winter's end, it is also meant as a celebration of good triumphing over evil.
