Community is more than simply the space we share — it’s about the connections between people. Through all the challenges of this past year, 鶹ý’s people have demonstrated that they can still come together and accomplish great things, even while working apart.
Being centred around education, universities naturally aim to inspire change, ingenuity and social responsibility. And this has rarely been more evident at 鶹ý than in 2020 when the university community rose to meet every challenge the year had in store. While students, staff, faculty and researchers carried the weight of shifting quickly to a virtual environment, they did not slow down efforts to push important societal and global issues to the forefront and advocate for a better future.
Stories of the important work by Dal’s communities are found throughout this year’s edition of the 鶹ý Community Report, focusing on the idea that community is more than simply the space we share.
Released each spring, the Community Report highlights stories, projects and experiences that demonstrate Dal’s important role in our local community and across the region, country and world. It also brings to light the personal stories of Dal community members, and the outstanding work they continue to do in our region.
"Our community is built on common values, mutual priorities and a spirit of collaboration that acknowledges how our fates are intertwined,” says President Deep Saini. “The experience of this COVID-19 pandemic has proven that we can work through great challenges and emerge stronger.”
Stories showcased in this year’s report include the expansion of Dal’s world-leading research in renewable energy, the university’s commitment to forging stronger partnerships with African Nova Scotian and Mi’kmaq communities, the incredible achievements of students inside and outside the (virtual) classroom, and how the dedication of Dal’s health specialists has contributed to Nova Scotia’s successful response during the pandemic.
