Women’s Hockey

The Tigers began the week with a huge team win over the rival Saint Mary’s Huskies on Tuesday night.

Megan O’Neill scored with four minutes left in the first period to give the Tigers an early lead, but a fury of goals in the second period from both sides made the game a 3-3 tie going into the third period. Maggie Beaton scored off a feed from Taylor Sokay with just three minutes remaining in the third period to cement a 4-3 victory for the Tigers. Jeanne Morin made 35 saves in the victory.

The Tigers couldn’t repeat their strong performance on Friday, losing 6-2 to the UPEI Panthers despite a 30 save performance by Jeanne Morin. Joleen MacInnis and Maggie Beaton scored, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers ran into a hot Panthers goalies.

On Sunday they travelled to Moncton to do battle with the Aigles Bleues. After being down 1-0 after the first period, Fielding Montgomery scored off a pass from Sarah Robichaud in the second period to knot the game at one. After an overtime period, the game went into a shootout that saw Moncton come out on top.

The losses drop the Tigers to 5-12-3 on the season and they sit last in the AUS with 13 points on the season. They will host the St. Thomas Tommies at Alumni Arena next Friday at 7:00pm.

Women’s Basketball

The Tigers got off to a rough start this weekend when they took on Justine Colley and the undefeated St. Mary’s Huskies on Friday, losing 93-79. The Tigers played well, shooting 40.0% on the night, including 44.4% from deep, but it wasn’t enough against a tough Huskies squad. Tessa Stammberger had yet another stellar game for the Tigers, shooting 9-14 from the field for 24 points. She also picked up ten boards to complete the double-double. Courtney Thompson capitalized on her many trips to the charity stripe, going 13-15.

The Tigers hosted the Cape Breton Capers on Saturday night and played much better on their home court. The Tigers rebounded from a weak first quarter where they were outscored 23-8, but they used a strong second half to get back into the game, outscoring the Capers 48-27 as they went on to win 67-62. Thompson had a game-high 25 points, while Stammberger had 21 of her own.

The Tigers now sit in sixth in the AUS with a 6-6 record, and will be back on the court Friday night when they host the UPEI Panthers at 6:00pm at the Dalplex.

Men’s Basketball

What was supposed to be a season-turning weekend didn’t go quite as planned for the Tigers.

They failed to capitalize on two four-point games, with losses coming against the Saint Mary’s Huskies and the Cape Breton Capers.

On Friday night, Kashrell Lawrence had 20 points and six rebounds in only ten minutes of action on Friday night against the Huskies, but it wasn’t enough as the Huskies cruised to a 78-60 victory. Devon Stedman added seven points and nine rebounds.

Saturday’s game against the Cape Breton Capers was a tale of two halves. After the first half, the Tigers were down 39-14, but they stormed back in the second, outscoring the Capers 32-17, but their comeback fell short as they lost 56-46. Stedman had a team-high 14 points and ten rebounds for a double-double, while Jarred Reid scored 11 off the bench.

The losses move the Tigers to 2-11 on the season, and eight points away from the final playoff spot in the AUS. The Tigers will look to get things back on track when they host the UPEI Panthers on Friday night at the Dalplex at 8:00pm.

Men’s Hockey

The Tigers got down 4-0 after two periods against the Acadia Axemen on Friday night, and couldn’t complete the comeback, despite two third period goals from Fabian Walsh and Andrew Langan. Bobby Nadeau made 39 of 46 saves in the loss for the Tigers.

The loss drops the Tigers to 2-18-1 on the season and extends their losing streak to three games. They will face the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Tuesday to make up for a previously cancelled game, and then will host the St. Thomas Tommies on Friday at 7:00pm.

Women’s Volleyball

The Tigers looked dominant in their only game of the week as they hosted the Acadia Axewomen on Friday night at the Dalplex in their last home game of the regular season. The Tigers won easily 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-14), looking in top shape for the upcoming AUS playoffs.
