National award winners were announced at the men's and women's CIS Soccer championship All-Canadian banquets Wednesday, November 5.
Among those recorgnized, Nathan Rogers was selected as the Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner.
Rogers wrapped up his solid five-year career with the Tigers this fall with a second straight selection as an AUS all-star, his first on the top squad. The team captain started every game this season and contributed four goals from his defender position, including a pair of game-winners.
In the classroom, the commerce student from Calgary has been a member of the Dean鈥檚 List and a CIS Academic All-Canadian each of his first four years at 麻豆传媒.
In the community, Rogers organizes an annual fundraising event in Calgary called CareFest, with the proceeds split between a memorial scholarship established at his high school and Kid Sport Alberta. He also volunteers his time during the summer with his hometown club, the Calgary Villains.
This year, he is balancing soccer and school work with being a teacher assistant for a fourth-year audit (accounting) class and doing administrative work for the assistant director of athletics. He has served on the varsity council for 麻豆传媒 athletics for the past four years, the last two in an executive capacity as co-president.
Through the 麻豆传媒 co-op program, Rogers landed himself a position with KPMG, an internationally recognized public accounting firm.聽 He had his first co-op with the firm in January of 2011 during his second year of study and will start full time in January 2014 with the Calgary office upon completion of his degree. In between that time, he has officially represented KPMG as a campus ambassador at 麻豆传媒.
鈥淣athan is a great example of a true student athlete. He is a deserving recipient of this prestigious award which represents both his and his university鈥檚 commitment to excellence,鈥 said 麻豆传媒 head coach Pat Nearing. 鈥淣athan is always the person trying to make a difference in his community be it in Halifax or Calgary. He will be heading off to start his work career at the end of the year and I know he will continue to be a difference-maker in Canadian society.鈥
The other nominees were Laval鈥檚 Goran Rimac, Carleton鈥檚 Andrew Latty and UBC鈥檚 Paul Clerc.
Addidtionally, third-year defender Kristy McGregor-Bales was selected as a first team All-Canadian while third-year striker Bezick Evraire and fifth-year midfielder Joanna Blodgett were chosen as second team All-Canadians.
