Men’s Volleyball

The men’s volleyball team travelled to Pennsylvania this past weekend to play in a tournament hosted by Penn State. On Thursday, the Tigers played Monterrey Tech in their first match of the weekend. Monterrey Tech took the match in three consecutive sets. Glenn Lassaline led the Tigers with 10 kills. On Friday, Dal played their second match of the weekend against Ohio State. It was a repeat of the previous day with the Tigers falling to Ohio in three consecutive sets. The Tigers ended their weekend on a high note, playing their last match of the weekend against the hosts. The Tigers were able to take the match, three sets to two and finish the weekend with a win.

Â鶹´«Ã½ will host the AUS-RSEQ Interlock event this weekend.

Women’s Volleyball

The women’s volleyball team was also on the road this past weekend, travelling to Kingston, Ontario to participate in the Queen’s Invitational Tournament. The weekend started off well for the Tigers when they took their first match in three consecutive sets against the hosts on Friday night. The team fell to their next two opponents, Sherbrooke (3-0) the following day and Manitoba (3-1) on Sunday.

They head to Acadia on October 25th at 7pm for their first regular season game.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team hosted the Subway Centennial Tournament this past weekend at Â鶹´«Ã½. The Tigers played Carleton University on Friday evening. The Ravens led after the first quarter and Dal responded by taking the lead in the second. The Tigers couldn’t hold off the Ravens and eventually fell, 71-53. Robbi Daley led the Tigers with 17 points.

The Tigers faced the UQAM Citadins on Saturday night. Their ball control was subpar to start the game and they had seven turnovers in the first quarter alone. The Tigers relied on their solid shooting and led the Citadins 23-15 after the first quarter. The next two quarters saw Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s offense sputter, but solid defensive play and poor shooting from UQAM kept them in the game.

The game came down to the final possession and when Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s entry pass to the wing was nearly picked off, Tessa Stammberger grabbed the ball and swung it to Robbi Daley, who was wide open on the three-point line and sunk the shot to put the Tigers up 57-55 with 0.7 left on the clock. The Tigers would hold on for the win.

On Sunday they took on the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Although the Tigers held last year’s CIS Player of the Year Justine Colley to just five points, they simply couldn’t recover from a 22-9 deficit after the first quarter. Tessa Stammberger was named a tournament all-star after leading the team with 17 points.

Â鶹´«Ã½ will travel to Laval to play in a pre-season tournament this weekend.

Men’s Basketball

The Tigers were in Antigonish competing in the StFX Invitational over the weekend, kicking it off with a game against StFX on Friday night. They got strong guard play from Jarred Reid and Ritchie Kanza Mata, who had 19 and 11 points respectively. Kashrell Lawrence continued his already impressive sophomore pre-season with 11 points and 7 boards. The Tigers would lead the whole way and defeat the X-Men 69-49.

On Saturday they took on the Cape Breton Capers, playing without starting big men Devon Stedman and Simon Marr. Ritchie Kanza Mata, who was named a tournament all-star, led the team with 17 points. Chidi Majok played very well in his first start of the year, getting 13 points and 8 rebounds. The Tigers led 19-11 after the first quarter, but strong second and third quarters by Saint Mary’s led to a 82-72 loss.

The team is back in action when they travel to Laval next weekend.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team also travelled to St. John’s this past weekend but didn’t have as much success. Tigers Bianca Jakisa and Eunnie Kim added two goals for Dal in the first half, followed by a third goal in the second by Daphne Wallace. The Tigers won 3-1.

On Sunday, the team battled the Sea-Hawks again but couldn’t repeat the previous day’s success and came away with a scoreless draw. The Tigers are now tied for second in the conference with Acadia, who they play on October 25th at 5pm at home.

Women's Hockey

The Tigers started their regular season in Antigionish Friday night. StFX controlled the puck throughout the game scoring seven unanswered goals.

Unswayed by the disappointing loss, the Tigers took to the ice the next day for their first home game of the year at SMU's Alumni Arena agaist St. Thomas. Both teams played strong and kept the first period scoreless.

With seven minutes left in the second period, rookie Lisa MacLean scored, giving Dal the lead. To start off the third period, STU had an opportunity to tie things up with a five on three power play but the Tigers held a tight triangle and kept the Tommies at bay.

Things started getting physical with less than ten minutes in the game, with the Tommies trying to tie things up. Goalie Mati Barrett had a crucial save with 25 seconds on the clock.  Dal came away with the win (1-0) in their home season opener.

The Tigers will play their next game on Oct. 25 against Mount Allison at 7pm at home (SMU's Alumni Arena).

Men’s Hockey

The men’s hockey team opened the regular season on Friday night with a game against the UPEI Panthers. The Panthers got off to a quick start with a power play goal in the first ten minutes by Tyler Brown. The Tigers responded with a goal from Matt English, tying things up the end of the first period.

UPEI came back in the following period adding 4 more goals, bringing the final score to 5-1 for the Panthers. The Tigers had multiple opportunities for goals on power plays but were outmatched against the nationally ranked Panthers.  The veteran team outshot Dal, 38 to 22.

On Saturday night the Tigers had a chance to redeem themselves in their second home game of the weekend against St Thomas University. The Tommies were on the board first, but Tiger Brett Theberge evened the score. Before the first period was over, the Tommies had another goal, leaving the Tigers trailing for the rest of the game.
