Congratulations to Carolyn Watters (Vice-President Academic & Provost) upon receiving an honorary Doctor of Science from Acadia University. Dr. Watters is being recognized as one of the first women to graduate in computer science in Canada; and as the principal, co-founder, and a director of MathResources, Inc., one of the developers of educational math objects and interactive tools in Canada whose products are used worldwide. Dr. Watters received the honorary degree at the May 16 ceremony and delivered an address to graduates during the morning鈥檚 convocation.

Congratulations to student Holly Simon (School of Architecture) upon winning first place prize in the 13th annual Berkeley Prize Essay Competition for Architectural Design Excellence for her essay, 鈥淢useum of Music Moves a City.鈥� This competition is open to students enrolled in any undergraduate architecture program throughout the world.
Congratulations to the Cities and Environment Unit, recipient of the 2011 Canadian Institute of Planners Award for Excellence in the category of Social Planning.聽 The award recognizes CEUs 鈥渁pproach to change鈥� which extends the principles of community-based planning through project development and implementation in a way that empowers communities to maximize the benefits of every project.聽 The submission, entitled, 鈥淐ommunity Plan Design Build:聽 An Approach to Change,鈥� highlights four community-based, project-driven and locally-focused initiatives undertaken with four First Nation communities in Saskatchewan.

Congratulations to David Precious (Oral & Maxillofacial Sciences) upon being awarded The Canadian Dental Association Medal of Honour, the pinnacle award of the Canadian Dental Association recognizing outstanding service, leadership and humanitarianism at the local, provincial, national and international levels.聽 Due to the distinctive and special nature of this award, there is no requirement for the award to be given in any one year. Only one award is given at any one time, and only two awards will be given within any five-year period.聽 Only 10 living recipients can hold this award at any one time.

Congratulations to Spring Farrell (Post Doc, Physiology & Biophysics) who recently won the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics - Neuropharmacology Division: Postdoctoral Scientist Award for her work and oral presentation, 鈥淪omatostatin receptor subtype 4 modulation of L-type calcium channels in聽rat retinal ganglion cells.鈥澛� The award was made at the Experimental Biology Meeting in Washington, DC on April 12, 2011.
Congratulations to Jeannette Janssen (Mathematics & Statistics) for being appointed Director of the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS) effective July 1, 2011. Since its inception, AARMS has played an important role in research activities in the Atlantic region, sponsoring or co-sponsoring numerous meetings and workshops, in addition to a postdoctoral program and an annual summer school for graduate and promising undergraduate students.
Congratulations to Edward Susko (Mathematics & Statistics) for being awarded the 2011 CRM-SSC Prize, co-sponsored by the Centre de recherches math茅matiques and the Statistical Society of Canada.聽 According to the citation, the prize was awarded 鈥渇or his pioneering work in probabilistic and statistical modelling in biology, evolution and genetics, and his important collaborative and interdisciplinary contributions to the understanding of comparative genomics and molecular phylogenetics.鈥�
