Congratulations to Jamie Baillie, Wadih Fares, Nancy MacCready-Williams, and Jim Spatz (members, 麻豆传媒 Board of Governors) who were again named in Atlantic Business Magazine鈥s Top 50 CEOs for 2010.

Congratulations to William Maes (Libraries) upon being elected as Vice Chair/Chair Elect of OCLC鈥檚 (Online Computer Library Center) Americas Regional Council.听This was the first election of officers for the Americas Regional Council since OCLC governance changed from a single members council to a global council and three regional councils--Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Americas Regional Council is comprised of members from libraries and cultural heritage organizations in Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States.听OCLC is a non-profit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world's information and reducing library costs.听

Faculty of Architecture and Planning

Congratulations to Richard Kroeker and Brian Lilley (Architecture) for their design 鈥淧ictou Landing Health Centre鈥 being given the International Architecture Award for 2010 from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design & The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and Metropolitan Arts Press, Ltd.听 Others involved in this project: Peter Henry (Lecturer 鈥 Architecture) local Architect of Record; Trevor Butler (Adjunct Professor Architecture), Building Services Consultant; Kevin Loewen (Dal Alumnus), Project Manager for Pictou Landing First Nation; Kim Thompson (Architecture) who worked with 麻豆传媒 Architecture students and local youth to build earth wall finishes in the building.听 The International Architecture Awards are 鈥渢he World鈥檚 Most Prestigious Global Awards for New Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interiors, and Urban Planning.鈥澨

Congratulations to Paul Bishop (Process Engineering & Applied Science) and Christopher Boland (recent M.A.Sc. graduate) et al are recipients of the 2010 MPIF Howard I. Sanderow Outstanding Technical Paper Award from the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) for their paper, 鈥淥n the Development of an Aluminum PM Alloy for 鈥楶ress-Sinter-Size鈥 Technology,鈥 which was selected as the grand prize winner among 170 papers presented at the 2010 International Conference on Powder Metallurgy and Particulate Materials held in Hollywood Florida, USA, June 27-30.

Faculty of Health Professions

Congratulations to Joseph Byrne (Health Administration) who was recently recognized by the IWK Health Centre for his outstanding clinical care of the children and families of the Maritimes by naming the 鈥淒r. Joseph M. Byrne Award for Excellence in Child Clinical Psychology鈥 in his honour.听The award will be given annually to a Clinical Psychologist in the Maritimes who exhibits excellence in clinical practice.

Congratulations to Katherine Harman (Physiotherapy) who received the Female Athlete of the Year Award at the RICOH Provincial Sport Awards Ceremony on June 5, 2010. Dr. Harman has been rowing for 10 years. It was noted at the presentation that this performance was especially remarkable as it was the fastest time of the day, in any age category.

Congratulations to Susan Mansour (Pharmacy), one of three recipients of the AFPC/Woods-Hughes Special Service Award which were presented at the Awards Dinner at the Canadian Pharmacy Education and Research Conference in Vancouver in June. This award recognizes the many contributions Dr. Mansour has made to AFPC (Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada).

Congratulations to Emily Murray (MA HPRO student, Health and Human Performance) who recently won the Bultz Award for Best Student Poster Presentation for her poster, 鈥淓xploring the psychosocial experience of sexuality in young adult cancer survivors and implications for sexual health,鈥 at the 2010 Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology and International Psycho-Oncology Society鈥檚 congress held recently in Quebec City.听 Emily was supervised by Dr. Lynne Robinson (School of Health and Human Performance).

Congratulations to Ingrid Sketris (Pharmacy) upon being awarded the AFPC (Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada)-Pfizer Research Career Award.听 This award recognizes research excellence of members of the academic staff of Faculties, Colleges, or Schools of Pharmacy in Canada.

Congratulations to George Turnbull (Health Professions) who was honoured at a gala on May 20, 2010 by the Parkinson Society Maritime Region which paid tribute to Dr. Turnbull鈥檚 career as a 鈥淧arkinson鈥檚 Pioneer鈥 through his innovative work at the Maritime Parkinson鈥檚 Clinic 鈥 a free clinic at 麻豆传媒 that helps patients with Parkinson鈥檚 retain mobility through exercise.听 鈥淗e operates outside the box鈥 says clinic patient Carole A. Hartzman, 鈥淗e thinks creatively.鈥

Congratulations to Anne Marie Whelan (Pharmacy) who, along with her colleagues, won 鈥淏est Poster Presentation鈥 at the Canadian Pharmacists Association Conference held in Calgary this past May. Their poster was entitled, 鈥淣ova Scotia Women鈥檚 Knowledge, Attitudes, Beliefs and Perceptions of Barriers Regarding Emergency Contraception Pills,鈥 and was funded by the NSHRF (Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation).

Congratulations to Jocelyn Downie (Law) who has been elected both to the Fellowship in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and to the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), Academy of Social Sciences.听 Dr. Downie is described by the RSC as 鈥渁 Canadian leader and international expert in the intersecting areas of health law, policy, and ethics.听 Her work on end-of-life law and policy, the governance of research involving humans, and neuroethics has helped to shape policy and practice here and abroad.鈥澨

Faculty of Management

Congratulations to Danielle Cossarini (Master鈥檚 student, Library and Information Studies) who won the 2010 New England Chapter of the American Society for Information Science & Technology Student Travel Award for her paper, 鈥淐ommunicating Scientific Information for Environmental Solutions:听 A Knowledge Management Perspective.鈥澨 The jury chair stated that Ms. Cossarini 鈥渨rote a truly excellent paper that deserves this recognition.鈥澨 The award will support Ms. Cossarini鈥檚 travel to the annual conference of the American Society for Information Science and Technology in Pittsburgh in October.听

Congratulations to Peter Duinker (Resource and Environmental Studies) upon being selected as one of two recipients of the Canadian Institute of Forestry鈥檚 2010 Canadian Forestry Scientific Achievement Award.听 As indicated in his notification, 鈥測our many achievements during your professional life and career and your dedication to interdisciplinary forest science and research make you truly deserving of this honour.鈥澨

Congratulations to Sina Adl ( Biology) upon being elected President of the International Society of Protistologists (ISOP), the international umbrella society of all other protistology societies, including the various national societies.听The ISOP is an international association of scientists devoted to research on single-celled eukaryotes, or protests, promotes the presentation and discussion of new or important facts and problems in protistology, and works to provide resources for the promotion and advancement of this science.

Congratulations to Eric Mills (Oceanography) who received the Canadian Nautical Research Society / Soci茅t茅 canadienne pour la recherche nautique Keith Matthews Award for Best Book for, The Fluid Envelope of Our Planet:听 How the Study of Ocean Currents Became a Science, University of Toronto Press. The annual Keith Matthews Award is for the best book published in the previous calendar year on a Canadian nautical subject or by a Canadian on any nautical subject.听

Research Services

Congratulations to Patricia Lindley (Research Services) who recently received the CAREB-ACCER President鈥檚 Award from the Canadian Association of Research Ethics Boards, along with Diann Nicholson of the IWK, in recognition of the role they played in founding this national organization.听The organization has grown from the 10 original members to approximately 300 representing universities, colleges, teaching hospitals and research institutes across Canada.

Correction: In the July issue of Kudos we congratulated Robert Bortolussi upon receiving the Member Recognition Award from the Canadian Paediatric Society.听Dr. Bortolussi鈥檚 primary appointment is in Pediatrics, not Microbiology & Immunology as was noted in Kudos. Our apologies for the error.
