Congratulations to Gianna Aleman-Milan (Chemistry), winner of the Canadian Society for Chemistry Faculty Advisor Award. This award is presented on an annual basis to one faculty advisor from each Society (CSC, CSChE and CSCT) who has demonstrated exceptional performance working with students to plan and implement student chapter activities.聽Students submit the nominations.

Congratulations to Lars Boggild (student, ESS) for being one of 6 grand prize winners of Environment Canada鈥檚 Nature Matters contest 鈥 a contest celebrating the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity (IYB).聽Mr. Boggild won by submitting his SUST 1001 Creative Assignment for which he did a video slam poem.聽For winning, he will be flown to Ottawa for the grand reopening of the Canadian Museum of Nature, and his video will be shown at the Biosphere in Montreal for the entire 2010 year.

Congratulations to Brian Bow (Political Science) for being awarded the 2009/2010 Donner Prize for the best book on Canadian public policy for his book, 鈥淭he Politics of Linkage:聽 Power, Interdependence and Ideas in Canada-U.S. Relations.鈥澛燭he Donner Prize was established in 1998 to reward 鈥渆xcellence and innovation in Canadian public policy thinking, writing and research,鈥 and carries with it a $35,000 prize.聽

Congratulations to Peter Camfield (Pediatrics) upon receiving the Hower Award from the Child Neurology Society to honor his 32-year career in Child Neurology at 麻豆传媒 and the IWK Health Centre.聽Established in 1973, this is the most prestigious award of the Child Neurology Society.

Congratulations to Zhizhang (David) Chen (Electrical & Computer Engineering) upon being inducted as a Fellow into the Canadian Academy of Engineering on June 3, 2010. Members of the Academy are nominated and elected by their peers to honorary Fellowships, in view of their distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession.

Congratulations to Ashley Cox (Urology resident), recipient of the 2010 Professional Association of Residents in the Maritime Provinces (PARI-MP) Resident Well-being Award.聽Dr. Cox received the award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to resident well-being, compassion for patients, dedication to medicine, support to colleagues, and leadership in balancing a healthy work and home life.

Congratulations to Jeff Dahn (Chemistry) upon receiving the Rio Tinto Alcan Award, from the Canadian Society for Chemistry.聽This award is presented to a scientist who has made a distinguished contribution to the fields of inorganic chemistry or electrochemistry while working in Canada.

  • Rebecca Spencer (B.Sc. Kinesiology), undergraduate poster presentation:聽 鈥淗2K:聽The Results of a Pilot Study of a Physical Activity Intervention in an Elementary School,鈥 Spencer, R.A., Hoyt, J., Yates, G., Miller, J., Hancock Friesen, C.L.

Congratulations to 麻豆传媒鈥檚 Faculty of Dentistry, which is featured extensively in the April 2010 issue of the 鈥淛ournal of the Canadian Dental Association.鈥澛燭he issue features a guest editorial by Tom Boran, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, and stories about the student research experience, cleft lip and palate outreach initiatives, oral health research, the Bachelor of Dental Hygiene program, and much more.

Congratulations to Vittorio Frigerio (French) for his Halifax-based 鈥減hilosophical detective novel,鈥 鈥淟a Cath茅drale sur l鈥檕c茅an,鈥 being shortlisted for Radio Canada鈥檚 Prix des lecteurs, an award that recognizes works of fiction written by writers from Canada鈥檚 francophone minority communities, outside Qu茅bec.聽Twenty-five French-Canadian releases had previously been selected in the fall of 2009, but only five made the short-list.聽Although not the final selection, being in the top five is a significant accomplishment.

Congratulations to Tara Gaskin (student, Architecture) for her 2nd place prize in the essay competition for 鈥淭he Confederacy Council House at Six Nations Reserve No. 40:聽A monument to First Nations culture and community,鈥 at the 12th Annual international Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Architectural Design Excellence.

Congratulations to Carolyn King (Physiotherapy) upon being selected by the Nova Scotia College of Physiotherapists as the recipient of Physiotherapist of the Year.聽This distinction is awarded annually to honour an individual who makes an outstanding contribution to physiotherapy.

Congratulations to Robyn Murphy (MSc Rehabilitation Research graduate student), upon winning the 2010 N.S. Institute of Science Writing Competition for her paper entitled, 鈥淲aiting for the Cure:聽 Balancing Medicine and Quality of Life for People Living with Cancer.鈥

Congratulations to Lynette Reid (Bioethics), recipient of a 2010 Certificate of Merit Award from the Canadian Association for Medical Education.聽The award recognizes faculty for outstanding contributions to medical education in Canadian Medical Schools.

Congratulations to Zhe (Jerry) Ren (PhD student, Economics) for winning first place in the CIHR-IHSPR CAHSPR 2010 Student Poster Competition for his poster entitled, 鈥淎 Multilevel Analysis of Price Dynamics for a Selected Cohort of Drugs.鈥澛燭his annual competition is designed to encourage graduate students to showcase their work at the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR) annual conference and to recognize the outstanding research efforts of up-and-coming health services and policy researchers.聽Mr. Ren also won the Award for Best Student Poster at the 2010 Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) Symposium for, 鈥淎 Multilevel Analysis of Price Differentials for a Selected Cohort of Drugs.鈥澛 This award was granted based on the research quality, structure and organization of the poster presentation.

Congratulations to Sandy Rennie (Physiotherapy) and George Turnbull (Physiotherapy, Health Professions), recipients of the prestigious Canadian Physiotherapy Association Life Membership Award for their contributions to the physiotherapy profession and to the Canadian Physiotherapy Association through outstanding service for over 25 years at local and national levels.

Congratulations to Holly Simon (student, Architecture) for winning the 12th Annual international Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Architectural Design Excellence Travel Fellowship 鈥渇or travel to a 2010 European Capital of Culture Heritage preservation and adaptive reuse program in Pecs, Hungary.鈥

Congratulations to Dal News and editor, Marilyn Smulders (Communications and Marketing) in being awarded a bronze Prix d鈥橢xcellence Award in the best newspaper category by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE).聽Judges said Dal News was attractive and easy to read, with a creative layout and well-written stories.

Congratulations to Ron Stewart (Prof Emeritus, Medicine & Health Professions) upon being recognized with the Paul E. Pepe Excellence in Emergency Medicine Services (EMS) Award by the National Association of EMS Physicians. Dr. Stewart (along with three other 麻豆传媒 medical alumni 鈥 Dr. Jim Smith, Dr. Dan Reid, and former premier Dr. John Hamm) was also recently designated honourary member of the Executive Council of Nova Scotia (also known as the Cabinet).聽The designation entitles Dr. Stewart to use 鈥淭he Honourable鈥 and the initials 鈥淓CNS鈥 with his name.

Congratulations to Michael Ungar (Social Work), recipient of the 2010 Canadian Association of Social Workers Distinguished Service Award for Nova Scotia.聽Dr. Ungar received his award at a reception celebrating Social Work Week on March 24, 2010.

Congratulations to Anne Marie Whelan (Pharmacy) upon being awarded Fellowship status in the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists in recognition of her work in primary health care. The CSHP is a national society of pharmacists in Canada that is 鈥渃ommitted to the advancement of safe, effective medication use and patient care in hospitals and related health care settings.鈥澛
