Lifelong learning
Dr. Rosemary Herbert, Dean of Nursing at the University of Prince Edward Island, is a proud graduate of Â鶹´«Ã½ School of Nursing. She completed her BN in 1977 (Dal) and MN (Dal) in 1991. Both degrees were founded on an innovative and creative perspective of nursing that provided her with a strong foundation about the value of nursing and the importance of lifelong learning.

Shaped by these beliefs, Dr. Herbert completed a PhD from McGill University School of Nursing, as well as a diploma in Health Care Quality Improvement from the University of Helsinki and a certificate in Public Administration from the University of Prince Edward Island.

Dr. Herbert has been a nurse educator for 32 years. She was one of the inaugural faculty members selected to develop and implement the baccalaureate nursing program at UPEI in 1992. Prior to this, Dr. Herbert was a faculty member at the PEI School of Nursing.

Professional appointments
Dr. Herbert previously served as Dean of Nursing from 2000-2003, as the first Coordinator of the Master of Nursing program at UPEI from 2011-2012, and as Interim Vice-President of Academic Development at the University of Prince Edward Island in 2006, and again in 2008-2010.

Research interests
Dr. Herbert conducts research in empowerment, tobacco control, and population health. She is particularly interested in promoting the health of women and children. She is passionate about promoting global health initiatives for nursing students and is actively engaged in creating new global health opportunities for UPEI nursing students.

Professional contributions
Dr. Herbert’s most recent professional contributions include: UPEI representative Provincial Nursing Advisory Committee; board member of the Canadian Cancer Society, PEI Division; board member of Farmers Helping Farmers which conducts health, education and agricultural initiatives in Kenya; member of the Canadian Respiratory Health Professional Research Committee; member of the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission; Chair Academic Advisory Committee MPHEC; board member of C.H.A.N.C.E.S. Family Resource Centre.
