Description

James R. Johnston was the first member of the Nova Scotia African Canadian Community to graduate in Law from Â鶹´«Ă˝ in 1898, and he played a very active public, professional and community role throughout his short life. The James Robinson Johnston Graduate Entrance Scholarship is supported by the Endowment for the James Robinson Johnston Chair in Black Canadian Studies, which was established in July 1996 "...to bring Black culture, reality, perspectives, experiences and concerns into the Academy."

In the spirit of James Robinson Johnston, who believed that the best interests of African Canadians would be served through education, Â鶹´«Ă˝ each year offers a renewable graduate-level scholarship to a promising African Canadian student, providing them the opportunity to pursue master’s or doctoral studies in their program of choice.

Eligibility criteria

  • You must be a self-identifying African Canadian citizen or permanent resident who has been accepted into or applied for a master’s or doctoral program.

  • Applications are particularly encouraged from students whose program of study has the potential to contribute to African Canadian community enhancement and advancement.

  • If you hold any other scholarships, the JRJ Graduate Entrance Scholarship will be considered a “top-up award” to your other sources of funding. The total amounts you receive will not exceed $20,000 per academic year for master’s programs and $30,000 per academic year for doctoral programs.
