Periodontics

The three-year Master of Periodontics degree is designed to train competent periodontists to practise the full scope of periodontics and surgical implant dentistry using an evidence-based approach to treatment.

The program provides students with a variety of clinical experiences, emphasizing thorough patient evaluation and accuracy in diagnosis and treatment planning. Students will be trained to manage patients who are in need of treatment for a variety of periodontal diseases and mucogingival defects, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), dental implant therapy, and conscious sedation. Students will also participate in a research project.

Graduates of this program are eligible to write fellowship exams for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Periodontics and the American Board of Periodontology Diplomate Exams.

Admission requirements

  • Candidates must have completed a minimum of an accredited four-year DDS program (ie programs in Canada, US, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia) and be eligible for student licensure in the province of Nova Scotia.
  • A minimum A- average is required for the last two years of study.
  • Students for whom English is not a first language must submit a TOEFL score above 600 (or the equivalent score on a comparable test).
  • Applicants who graduated from a pre-doctoral dental program more than five years prior to application must demonstrate evidence of clinical practice within the last two years.

Please note: Given that the number of applicants exceeds the number of positions available, a record that satisfies the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
