From Nov 12-18, 2023, Dal AC faculty, staff and students travelled to Saint Lucia in support of the SAGE-06 (Skills to Access the Green Economy) project. Ìý
Funded by the Government of Canada via Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan), SAGE-06 seeks to strengthen climate-smart crop production in Saint Lucia by developing skills-based training programs that prioritize entrepreneurship and innovation.
During the week of trainings Dr. Lord Abbey and Michael McConkey worked with Sir Arthur Lewis Community College staff and students on applied research and farm management planning, delivering lectures and trainings on carbon sequestration, composting, farm bio-security and record-keeping.
Audrie-Jo McConkey and Margie Hartling led a week-long training on food dehydration and value-addition with our partners at National Skills Development Centre. Twenty-sixÌý participants from a variety of backgrounds learned about the techniques and processes that will preserve fruits and vegetables, reducing loss and waste while creating new revenue streams for these agricultural products.
The training team was joined by Dal AC students Luci Ellis and Kaveen Jayawardane who worked with students and learners from both partner institutions in the areas of value-addition processing, entrepreneurship and student-run enterprises.
