Dr. Patrick Holland (MD’20) was always drawn toward a career in health care.

Before obtaining his medical degree, Dr. Holland was a pharmacist, but after completing his pharmacy studies in 2016, he realized he wanted to engage more deeply in patient care and went on to pursue medicine at 鶹ý.

Dr. Holland’s dual perspective as both a pharmacist and medical doctor has enriched his approach to medicine.

“It was definitely helpful going through med school ... having an understanding of both what patients and pharmacists go through on a day-to-day basis,” says Dr. Holland. His early experiences in community pharmacy continue to inform his patient-centered care and teamwork with medical colleagues, he adds.

Leading during a challenging time

At the height of the pandemic, Dr. Holland was a student leader who guided his classmates through administrative challenges. He became a pivotal organizer, mobilizing a student-led committee to coordinate volunteer efforts and ensure everyone met safety protocols while preparing for final exams.

This dedication continued into his residency, where he served two terms as President of Maritime Resident Doctors, actively advocating for better resident working conditions and wellness. His advocacy extended to various committees and advisory boards, including the 鶹ý Medical Alumni Association (DMAA), earning him respect among peers and faculty alike.

Dr. Holland found his calling in medical oncology during his student rotation.

“I loved the collaborative, interprofessional atmosphere,” he says, appreciating the teamwork with nursing, pharmacy, and other medical professionals that oncology demands.

Now in his second year of oncology residency, Dr. Holland looks forward to practicing in the Maritimes and continues to be committed to advancing patient care and contributing to the healthcare system.
